Who is the Cubby Coach?

Hi, my name is Cara and I am The Cubby Coach. I have lived in Marin since I was pregnant with my first child. Both of my kids went into preschool at 2 years old and loved the experience thoroughly. Through the process of putting on a preschool fair for a local mother’s group, I discovered the need for a knowledge base to show what the options are and help guide people to find schools that fit their needs.

We are very lucky to have so many amazing preschools in Southern Marin to chose between for our little ones. Due to the sheer quantity and quality of the schools, the process of finding a preschool for one’s child can be a very daunting and time consuming endeavor. I am here to help with the process and guide you both through the options, the availabilities, and the applications. Hopefully this will free you up to spend more of your spare time having fun with your little one(s).

PRESCHOOL SELECTION IN A MARIN: A self-paced online course

As a result of reduced in person gatherings and a new skill set with online forums, I have created a self-paced online course to help you select preschools in Marin. My specific knowledge is specific to Marin preschools, but this course is general enough that it could apply to preschool selection in many other places as well.

Back when I had my first newborn, I was overwhelmed with having to think about preschool selection at the same time as trying to have my baby get ready for heading into daycare, gain some weight.. the baby not me, sleep more than a few hours at a time, etc… Since then I became a preschool consultant that has worked with hundreds of families one on one, in a workshop setting, or as a speaker at a preschool fair. I gained my first hand knowledge of preschools by visiting many preschools in Marin. There is so much amazing variation between the preschools. I realized that knowing about a philosophy alone was not enough to know what any particular preschool would be like.

Now with my new Covid enhanced online and Zoom skills, I am taking this information and am creating an online class to teach parents about preschool options and go over the preschool selection process. This self-paced class will teach you a little something about out preschool options –  Montessori, Waldorf, Reggio Emelia, Playbased, Academic, Traditional, Co-op, Language Based, Religious, Outdoor/Nature Based, and Emergent. We will think about your logistics, your goals and your child’s personality. We will also discuss preschool readiness.

I am kicking off this course (do not expect my videos to be perfect!), knowing that I will take your feedback and improve it before ironing out the fluidity of the videos. Services

Initial consultation:
I meet with parent(s) during the day or night to review the preschool options in Southern Marin. We’ll go through a interview process that will help tease out the right education philosophy for you and your child, location convenience, and a number of other key factors. Given your answers, we’ll discuss possible schools that meet your needs and I will make some recommendations based on my knowledge of the schools and their placement availability.

Touring the schools:
After the initial consultation you can choose to tour the schools on your own or I can accompany you. In either case I will provide a personalized checklist of things to notice, observe and ask on your tours.

Post tour meetings:
After you have toured the schools I can help you focus on the schools to which you’d like to apply. I can provide assistance with completing the applications and in some cases, help express the seriousness of your application to the school directors.

Relocation consulting:
For families that cannot meet with me or tour the schools in person, I am happy to consult over the phone or internet, and take the tours for you so that you can apply remotely.

Fees:
Initial Consultation – $400.00 (~4 hours including 1:1 consultation & report)
Additional services – $125.00 per hour

I can save you days of work and narrowing down schools. I have spent time at each of the schools and talked with all the directors. I am here to point you in the right direction and eliminate your initial ground work.

How much do you charge?

Can you determine which school my child should attend?
By telling me about your child and letting me what sort of programs you are looking for, I will let you know which schools best meet your needs.

Do you cover San Francisco options?
At this stage I am only knowledgeable about the schools in Southern Marin.
